This Saturday, December 3rd, is the one year anniversary of the death of Ron Santo. The legendary Chicago Cubs player and broadcaster passed away at the age of 70 from complications from bladder cancer. To help salute his longtime on air partner and friend, Cubs play-by-play announcer Pat Hughes has assembled 73 minutes of Santo's broadcasting highlights and humorous moments, and released them on a new compact disc.
Pat Hughes has produced, written and narrated CDs of other great baseball announcers before, as part of his Baseball Voices side job. Other CDs previously released feature such greats as Harry Caray, Marty Brennaman, Bob Uecker, Milo Hamilton, Harry Kalas and Jack Buck. Although he also worked in the broadcast booth for a while with Bob Uecker, this new CD has an even more deeply personal connection for Hughes. Santo & Hughes worked in the WGN-AM broadcast booth, calling Chicago Cubs games together for 15 years. The two developed more than an on-air chemistry -- they also developed a true friendship. The new CD, entitled "Ron Santo: Cubs Legend," has clips of Santo's goofier broadcasting side, including a discussion about his head of hair (or lack thereof), his awkward interview with Cubs pitcher Antonio Alfonseca (who Santo thought was named Al Fonseca), his inability to find the "cough button" when he needed to burp, a major league yogurt spill, and a confusing comparison between two sitcom monster families: The Munsters and The Addams Family. The CD tracks have also been made available to download at a discount from iTunes (for $9.99) and Amazon MP3 (for only $8.99). This is the second Ron Santo-related project for Pat Hughes this year. In June, Hughes released the book he co-authored called "Ron Santo: A Perfect 10."
