WGN-AM's John Williams will be hosting and conducting a holiday food drive tomorrow, entitled "Peanut Butter & Jolly," to benefit Chicagoland food pantries.
Midday radio host John Williams had found out that food pantries are experiencing an extreme lack of peanut butter, after producer Beth Swierk read a report on the peanut butter shortage yesterday. The shortage is largely due to peanut butter's rising cost. With peanut butter being one of the most requested items at food banks and with it being a kid-friendly source of protein with a long shelf life, he decided to quickly rally his listeners to help out with this problem.Williams is asking listeners (and even non-listeners) to help donate new, unopened containers of peanut butter tomorrow at various drop-off locations all around Chicago and the suburbs. (Smaller bottles of peanut butter work better for the food pantries than the larger ones will.) These donations will then be collected and donated on Friday to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Those donations will then be distributed among their network of 650 member food pantries. However, soon after that, a caller into Williams' afternoon show suggested the name of "Peanut Butter & Jolly" and the name stuck... like peanut butter to a roof of a mouth. Williams said today in a press release: "Everyone wants gifts at Christmas, but these people just need food. If you give to this campaign, we can all say Merry 'Chrithmath!'" The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago's food bank, is a non-profit food distribution and training center, providing food for hungry people, while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 678,000 adults and children in Cook County every year. The Food Depository's programs and services for children, older adults and the unemployed and underemployed address the root causes of hunger.
