The Arbitron ratings for the Chicago radio market for the "November" period (which is mostly October: 10/13/11-11/09/11) were released this week. The following is a study of the local ratings for the demographics of Persons 6+ (All Ages), Persons 25-54,and Persons 18-34.

Looking first at the all ages (6+) numbers...

The top of the all ages ratings features its usual subjects, but with some stations moving up fast and others slipping down. WBBM-AM, combined with its simulcast on WCFS-FM, drops .6 in a month and sits at 6.0 share. While that is still good enough for a first place victory, it is not much above its ratings when it was an AM-only station, disappointing many who expected higher results, especially with the station carrying the high-rated Chicago Bears game broadcasts on weekends. Taking a leap upward is WGN-AM who increased .3 to a 5.7 share in one month's time. Not only does this put WGN-AM close behind WBBM-AM, but these are also the highest ratings the station has delivered in a while that cannot be attributed to the Chicago Cubs broadcasts. Excitement about the new Chicago Blackhawks season contributed to the ratings increase for the station, but also WGN-AM was able to increase ratings with its own original news/talk content. WVAZ-FM only slipped .1 this month and is in third place with a 5.1 share, but this marks the second month in a row of slipping ratings, losing .4 in two months time. On the other side of the coin, WLS-FM has seen increases over the last two months, moving up .8 in that time. It now sits at #4 with a 4.7 share, it's highest ratings in years. WKSC-FM, sitting at #5, is also having a fantastic Fall. Since the August ratings, the station has risen from a 3.4 share to a 4.3 share -- a .9 increase.

For WLS-FM 94.7, the oldies station's extremely high ratings are bittersweet, as these are the final ratings for WLS-FM Operations Director Michael La Crosse. The station's new owner, Cumulus Media, has been going from market to market nationwide, eliminating jobs as a way to cut costs. Michael La Crosse, who had bee programming the station since December 2006, was among the many cut loose from WLS at the end of October.

Besides the stations already mentioned, other stations seeing decent movement upward include WLUP-FM and WPPN-FM. WLUP-FM has increased .6 since the September ratings, now at a 3.4 share, and is #12 in the rankings. WPPN-FM has gone from a 1.6 share in August to a 2.4 share in November -- a .8 increase this Fall. The station is now up to #17 in the rankings.

There is a chink in the armor of the three mighty Hubbard Broadcasting Chicago radio stations. WTMX-FM, WDVR-FM/WWDV-FM and WILV-FM each saw slipping ratings this Fall. This is unusual for the normally dominant ratings stations. WTMX-FM has dropped .7 since August and now sits at a 3.8 share and a #8 ranking. Its ratings for the last few months have steadily fallen: 4.5 - 4.2 - 4.1 - 3.8. WDRV-FM/WWDV-FM has slipped a full 1.0 share since September's ratings period, going from a 5.1 to 4.3 to 4.1. WILV-FM has fallen 0.4 share since September, and now sits at a 2.3 share. Since these stations tend to lose ratings in the last couple months of the year to WLIT-FM's holiday programming, it could be early next year before the three Hubbard-owned stations' fortunes begin to rise again.

Here is how the top of the Persons ages 6+ rankings looked for the November 2011 ratings period:

Tied for fourth place is WTMX-FM and WKSC-FM, who each pulled in a 4.6 share. For WKSC-FM, it was a slight increase, but for WTMX-FM, it was another month with a decrease. WOJO-FM is #6, WBBM-AM is #7, WUSN-FM is #8, WBBM-FM is #9, and WXRT-FM takes tenth place.

Seeing big increases in November over October's ratings were WPPN-FM, who increased by .7 share, and WSCR-AM, who increased by .6 share.

Notable decreases include WBBM-AM, who dropped .6 share in this demo in one month's time, and WLEY-FM, who dropped .5 share.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a quick look now at the younger demographic of Persons 15-34...

WGCI-FM stays even at #3 with a 6.5 share. WBBM-FM is still #4, but increases its share by .5 to a 6.4. WUSN-FM is again #5 with a 5.1 share, a .3 decrease. WTMX-FM is #6, WNUA-FM is #7, #8 is a tie between WXRT-FM and WPWX-FM, and #10 is a three-way tie between WLEY-FM, WLUP-FM and WVAZ-FM.
