In the first News & Notes of the week, there are local media stories of: Mully & Hanley going on the road; Tom Marker breaking some Blues news; sad news for Johnnie Putman; a new blog for Mary Sandberg; "Those Were The Days" visits MBC; WGN-TV picks up some new Fall shows; and ESPN Deportes Chicago is getting ready to launch both up north AND downtown. All of the details are just below.
* * WSCR-AM's morning team of Mully & Hanley will began broadcasting live from Indianapolis, home of Super Bowl XLVI, this morning. They will also be broadcasting their show from there on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Additionally, with the Super Bowl being one of the most gambled sports of all, Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley will be broadcasting live this coming Friday and next Monday from The Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, talking about the big game and the Vegas gambling point of view on every little aspect of the event. ![]() * * The Chicago Blues Festival, the largest free blues festival in the world, will be held again at Chicago's Grant Park this year on June 8-10. WXRT-FM's Tom Marker will exclusively unveil the headliners of this year's festival tonight on his weekly Blues program, "Blues Breakers." The show will air tonight on 93XRT from 9:00pm-10:00pm. Tonight's show will also celebrate the music of bluesman Bobby "Blue" Bland, who just celebrated his 82nd birthday. ![]() * * Sincere condolences to former WGN-AM overnight host Johnnie Putman on the loss of her Mother, who had been in ill health recently and in the hospital for the last two weeks. She passed away quietly on Friday evening, surrounded by her family. Johnnie Putman wrote about the sad loss on Steve & Johnnie's blogsite, which can be found HERE. ![]() * * Former Executive Producer for the Steve Dahl Show, Mary Sandberg, is now writing for the ChicagoNow blogsite. Her new blog, entitled "Randomly On Purpose," will be her thoughts on talk radio, sports, books, food, and other subjects that interest her. Her first blog was posted up earlier today. Sandberg exited as Dahl's producer at the end of last month. ![]() * * Each February, the classic radio program "Those Were the Days" celebrates "Jack Benny Month." This year, to kick off the 34th year they are doing so, WDCB-FM's "Those Were The Days" will be doing a live remote from the Museum of Broadcast Communications, with hosts Steve Darnall & Ken Alexander playing some of Jack Benny's best comedy bits from radio's golden age. The live radio broadcast will take place this Saturday, beginning at 1:00pm from the new MBC location, 360 N. State Street in Chicago. To help the MBC raise funds to become fully open, tickets are being sold to this live remote for $20 each, which can be ordered online at this link HERE. All proceeds will go to the MBC. Special guest for the radio broadcast will be Bruce DuMont, the founder/CEO/President of the Museum of Broadcast Communications. After the radio show, DuMont will personally take attendees on a brief tour of the new museum. For many years in the 80s and 90s, the "Those Were the Days" radio show was broadcast from the previous location of the MBC. ![]() * * Chicago's WGN-TV has signed on (as have all Tribune Broadcasting-owned TV stations) to carry the new syndicated cooking/nutrition/self-help show featuring celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito. The still-untitled show will feature DiSpirito helping families to change the way they eat and live. The weekly 30 minute show, premiering next Fall, will be part of a weekly 90 minute block of educational/informational shows, which also features the wildlife show "Animal Atlas" and the scholastic trivia show "On The Spot." * * For those within the broadcasting range of the translator W248BB, temporarily known as "97.5 The Bull," don't get too used to the Country music being played on there currently, as it won't be there much longer -- and that's no "Bull." The website for the "station," 975TheBull.com, will soon be gone, too. It appears ESPN has come to terms on an agreement with Clear Channel Chicago to take over that translator's signal, which Clear Channel has use of due to an agreement with EMF Broadcasting, the translator's owner. Starting in the next few days, 97.5 will be the Chicago outlet of ESPN Deportes, the Spanish-language sports/sports talk format that launches on north suburban WKRS-AM on Wednesday. News that 97.5 would also become the Spanish sports station was first mentioned on HERE on January 18th. The 250 watt signal from atop downtown Chicago's third tallest skyscraper, the Aon Center, reaches all of the city of Chicago and the communities that immediately border it. Many in the suburbs have said that they can also pick it up, although weakly. A new website, ESPNDeportesChicago.com is expected to launch along with the launch of the format on 97.5. ESPN Deportes will also be heard on WNUA-HD2 in place of "The Bull," which is on there now. Hmmm... Is a certain south-side professional sports team in talks with ESPN Deportes to have a number of Spanish-language broadcasts of their team on this new station starting this Spring? Could be... ![]()
