WGN-TV and CLTV will be utilizing new media, specifically Twitter, to connect with their viewers this week, with a pair of special events. They will also be looking back at one of the biggest stories of last year.
It may be hard to imagine with today's temperatures being abnormally high, but one year ago tomorrow afternoon was the start of the "Blizzard of 2011." It was the third worst snow storm in the Chicago's history, dumping more than 20 inches of snow in a rapid amount of time. WGN-TV and CLTV will mark the occasion by re-airing last year's award-winning special "Snowed Under: The Story of the Blizzard of 2011." The 30-minute documentary won a local Emmy award for "Outstanding Achievement for Documentary Programs - Topical" this past November. "Snowed Under" was produced by Tom Skilling (Executive Producer), Pamela Grimes (Producer), and Mike D'Angelo (Co-Producer). WGN-TV will end its 9:00pm newscast one half-hour early tomorrow night to show this special once again at 9:30pm. The following morning, Thursday at 10:00am, CLTV will have an encore airing of "Snowed Under." At 10:30am, immediately following that encore airing, CLTV viewers will be treated to a special LIVE "Ask Tom Why" special. The audience can send in questions to Tom Skilling, WGN-TV's Chief Meteorologist, via Twitter to @CLTVNews (hashtag #Skilling). CLTV viewers will also be able to call in to the television station at 877-358-CLTV (2588) to share their stories of last year's blizzard and ask Skilling their winter weather-related questions. For those at work or away from their televisions at this time, this very special edition of "Ask Tom Why" will streamed live on WGNTV.com and CLTV.com. UPDATE 2/2/12: Unfortunately, due to his being "under the weather," the 10:30am live tweet/chat session with Tom Skilling has been canceled. That will not be the only Twitter event happening at the WGN/CLTV studios on Thursday morning however... This Thursday, the WGN Morning News staff will be taking part in their first ever "live-tweet." Throughout the morning program, viewers will be able to interact live with the on-air anchors and reporters via Twitter. (The viewers will also be able to interact with each other.) Viewers will know when to do this when they see the on-air graphic containing the hashtag #WGNMorningNews. Fans can then tweet the station, using that hashtag in their message, to the following Twitter accounts: @WGNMorningNews, @Lashpot, @PaulKonrad, @PatTomasulo, @AnaBelaval, @DeanRichards, @ErinMcElroy2, @FrankHollandWGN, and @NancyLoo.Messages from fans & viewers will be displayed and discussed on the air throughout Thursday morning's broadcast. According to WGN-TV, this is one of the first times in the country that this has been done on a local television station. ![]()
