FOX Television's WFLD-TV has hired an unknown to take over as nightly news anchor this fall. Jeff Herndon will begin on the air in Chicago on October 1st.
Jeff Herndon essentially replaces Bob Sirott, who will be exiting the station in early September
. In addition to co-anchoring the "FOX 32 News at 9" weeknight newscasts, Herndon will also serve as a reporter for WFLD-TV's earlier newscasts.
Herndon comes to Chicago from KAKE-TV, the ABC-TV affiliate in Wichita, KS, where he has been a news anchor since July 2003. For the two years prior to that, Herndon had been KAKE-TV's weekend sports anchor. KAKE-TV was the station where he began his professional media career, working there initially from April 1997-September 1999 as a part-time sports photographer and reporter. In addition to his many years at KAKE-TV, Herndon also spent one year working at KTKA-TV in Topeka, KS as a weekend sports anchor.
In 2006, Herndon had been offered a job as a weekend news anchor at a KYW-TV in Philadelphia. After initially accepting the offer, he later turned it down, choosing to stay in Kansas, where he lived and worked his whole life.
Herndon's last day on the air for KAKE-TV will be September 6th. After that, he will be relocating to Chicago, for his first television job in a major market.
In today's official announcement, Tom Doerr, WFLD-TV's Vice President and News Director, said: "Jeff is an outstanding communicator and journalist with a proven track record of excellence. He is a leader and sought after journalist and we are excited to welcome him to this role at FOX 32."
Added Herndon within the announcement: "I'm looking forward to joining a talented team of journalists at FOX 32. The opportunity to join a newsroom focused on making a difference in the Chicago community made this an easy decision."
Herndon has won three local Emmy Awards for his on-air work at KAKE-TV. He is represented by 3 Kings Entertainment, owned by top talent agent Matthew Kingsley, husband of former WFLD-TV news anchor Jan Jeffcoat.
A native of Haysville, KS, Jeff Herndon earned his Bachelor's Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Wichita State University in 1999.
