WGCI-FM's DJ A-Oh has been named as the first program director at new Miami, FL Urban station, which launched earlier in October, WMIB-FM/103.5 The Beat. DJ A-Oh, whose real name is Abdul Hashem, will not take over in that role until January 1st, though.
DJ A-Oh is a native of Indianapolis, IN. He went to Ball State University in 2004 to major in Telecommunications, before switching to Columbia College Chicago in 2008 to major in Radio. While at school in Chicago, DJ A-Oh hosted the live dance mixing show "Masters in the Mix" on Columbia's WCRX-FM. He graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2010.
Earlier in 2010, DJ A-Oh began interning at WGCI-FM, assisting in the station's production. Soon after his graduation, the station was impressed enough with the young intern to hire him to be part of their staff, first on a part-time basis as a Friday and Saturday night as a host/mixer/producer.
In his just three years in professional radio, all at WGCI-FM, DJ A-Oh has taken on numerous roles at the station. These roles include: on-air host, producer, mixer, Imaging Director, Operations Assistant, and most recently Assistant Program Director.
In addition to his roles at WGCI-FM, DJ A-Oh voice tracks middays for Jacksonville, FL's WJBT-FM/93.3 The Beat. Since the launch of WMIB-FM earlier this month (formerly WSHE-FM), DJ A-Oh has also been voice tracking overnights for that station.
Along with working full-time in radio, DJ A-Oh is a club DJ, who has been heard doing live mixing at nightclubs around Chicagoland on a consistent basis for the last few years. He has been a club DJ since 2003.
Miami's WMIB-FM/103.5 The Beat launched on October 12th. A previous version of that station had been on the Miami radio dial from December 31, 2002 until May 14, 2010. That frequency then went through a couple of different formats, including different call letters (WSHE-FM), before this new version of "The Beat" returned this month.
In this week's announcement, DJ A-Oh said: "The opportunities and growth I've experienced at Clear Channel have truly been a blessing. Working under the outstanding leadership and guidance of the Chicago team has been amazing and I am excited for the opportunity to continue my journey. I am thrilled to join Clear Channel Miami and the exceptional team already at 103.5 The Beat, learning from their knowledge and continuing to deliver great radio to Miami. The Beat is back and we're ready to win!"
In his new role, DJ A-Oh will report to Alex Tear, the Vice President of Programming for Clear Channel Media + Entertainment Miami. Said Tear regarding his new hire: "DJ A-OH's drive, passion and skillset were exactly what we were looking for. Not only does he fully understand the lifestyle, he's already moving the Hip Hop format to new levels. The entire Beat family is excited to turn it up under his leadership."
DJ A-Oh isn't the only Chicago connection to WMIB-FM. Thanks to the magic of voice-tracking, WGCI-FM morning show co-host Nina Chantele is the Miami radio station's midday host. This new job will be in addition to her various other duties on WGCI-FM, WKSC-FM/103.5 Kiss FM, and WLS-TV/ABC 7 (as a semi-regular contributor on "Windy City LIVE"). Additionally, Friday and Saturday nights feature the WGCI-FM mixer/personality and Chicago native Thomas Johnson, who goes by the name of DJ 33 1/3.
