The Chicago Blackhawks once again delivered a big win for themselves, their fans and NBC last night. It seems that for the last month or so, each game they play, sets some sort of TV record. Last night's game was no exception.
For Chicago's overnight Nielsen ratings, WMAQ-TV pulled in a 25.99 average rating and a 40.9 average share for the 7:00pm-10:00pm broadcast. This means that an estimated 910,000 households were tuned into the Blackhawks/Flyers matchup. This 25.99 rating for Game #5 is their highest rating yet, beating the 25.10 rating that WMAQ-TV pulled in for Game #2 of this series. Games #3 & #4 were shown on the Versus Network. While those games set records for Versus and won the cable ratings for those nights, Versus does not reach near the amount of homes that NBC does. Game #4 on Versus was still able to pull in a 14.15 rating, though. Nationally, Game #5 of the NHL Finals pulled down a 4 rating and 7 share. That number is up over 50% from Game #5 of the NHL Finals last year. Approximately 4.6 million viewers watched the game in the United States last night. While the Blackhawks game was easily #1 on Chicago televisions, the NBA Finals was #2 with a 7.97 rating. However, nationally, basketball was king. Game #2 of the NBA Finals pulled in a 10.9 rating -- almost triple of that for hockey -- making it the most watched show of the night. Game #6 of the NHL Finals will be on NBC Wednesday night at 7:00pm. Should the Blackhawks win on Wednesday, it will be the final hockey game of the season. It is also anticipated to be the most-watched televised NHL game of all time. ![]()
