In today's News & Notes, we look at Sound Opinions getting dazed at the movies, Rick Kogan allowing almost anybody onto his show for a fee, Mel-T & Showbiz Shelly trying to get onto a syndicated TV show, WTMX's Melissa McGurren & WLUP's Jill Egan have baby news, Sondra Solarte gets hitched, Mike Toomey & Ana Belaval make you laugh, and the Chicago Tribune picks up an award. It is all just below...

* * WBEZ's Sound Opinions hosts, Greg Kot & Jim DeRogatis, are heading back to the movies tonight. It's another "Sound Opinions at the Movies," this evening featuring the cult classic, "Dazed and Confused." You can join Greg & Jim at the screening, which takes place at the Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Ave., Chicago). Doors open at 6:30pm, with the show starting at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.

* * It's not exactly "payola," but you can now attempt to buy your way onto Rick Kogan's WGN-AM weekend show, "The Sunday Papers." As a benefit for the Association for Women Journalists-Chicago, an auction has been started today for a chance to be on the air with Rick Kogan. The winner of this online/e-mail auction, along with up to three friends, can join Kogan in the WGN studios to be on the air for a segment. Additionally, the lucky winner will receive autographed copies of Kogan's books "A Chicago Tavern: A Goat, a Curse, and the American Dream" and "Sidewalks." To enter the auction, send an email with your bid to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The amounts of the current bid will be sent out frequently to bidders. If two bids of the same amount come in, the first email that arrives holds that bid. Bidders should include a name, address and telephone number on the bid email. The address and telephone number will not be shared, but your name will be included when the updated bid announcements are emailed. Bidding closes at one minute before Midnight on Wednesday, July 28. AWJ-Chicago members attending the annual summer picnic on July 29th will have one last chance to be the high bidder at the event. The winning bidder will then be announced that evening.

* * As a stunt to drum up publicity for the "Live with Regis & Kelly" syndicated television show, a contest was created to see which female radio personality would want to co-host one episode of the TV show with Regis Philbin. Thousands of women in radio applied and begged fans to vote for them. That gigantic list has now been compressed down to the "Semi-Finalists," which is a list of the Top 100 vote getters. Out of that list of 100 names, two are Chicago radio personalities: WBBM-FM's Showbiz Shelly and WKSC-FM's Mel-T. There are some pretty big names on that list that are also competing to win, including satellite radio's Robin Quivers & Gayle King and syndicated radio's Delilah & Kim Iverson. Also on the list is former Chicago radio morning personality, Kendra G, who left Power 92 in 2008. The complete list of semi-finalists can be seen HERE. Voting is being done on the Regis & Kelly Facebook page.

* * Belated congratulations to WTMX's morning traffic reporter and co-host Melissa McGurren on her pregnancy. Melissa and her boyfriend Steve are expecting their first child this winter.

* * Best wishes also to WLUP's morning traffic reporter Jill Egan. She and her husband are expecting their first child in just one month from now. (Must be something they put in the morning traffic reporters' coffee...)

* * And while we are handing out the congratulations to traffic reporters... Congratulations also to Sondra Solarte! The WFLD-TV traffic reporter "Good Day Chicago" married the love of her life, Jim Donahue this past Saturday. WFLD's Jan Jeffcoat and WTMX's Melissa McGurren were in the wedding party and numerous past & present co-workers of Sondra's were in attendance. The happy couple are now enjoying their honeymoon.

* * Frequent guest star on the WGN Morning News (most famously as Skip Parker & Batman), Mike Toomey will be bringing his critically acclaimed one man show, "Mike Toomey's TV & Me" to the stage again this Saturday night. The hilarious multi-media show will also feature WGN Morning News reporter Ana Belaval warming up the audience with her new stand-up act. Saturday's show will take place at the Mayne Stage, located at 1328 Morse Ave. in Rogers Park at 8:00pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance at this link HERE. As an added bonus, both Mike & Ana will be giving a sneak peek of the "TV & Me" live show on the WGN Morning News this Friday the 23rd.

* * The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors announced that the Chicago Tribune's Sunday section insert was one of their winners of their 2010 Best Sections Contest. The Association divided the newspapers of the country into three categories, each dependent on the paper's circulation size, and gave out five awards in each of the three categories. The Tribune's Sunday section was one of their Top 15, saying: "The Tribune's staff has defined its mission - to guide readers on everything to do in Chicagoland - clearly and distinctly." In July 2009, the new Tribune ownership decided to stop making the Sunday Chicago Tribune Magazine insert and turn it into simply a section of the Sunday newspaper, in a cost-cutting move.
